It's the Infinity Cache that stands out as the most important of the two, though I do love shiny things. What you need to know is that the second-generation RDNA gaming architecture at the core of the RX 6800 is more power efficient than ever, incredibly fast, and comes with new exciting hardware blocks in the Ray Accelerators and Infinity Cache. I've detailed the RDNA 2 architecture over in our AMD RX 6800 XT review (opens in new tab), and so I'll save you an eyeful here.

Either way, it's in reference to the total power drawn by the graphics card and not just the GPU alone. The RX 6800 runs at 250W TGP, or what AMD calls TBP. The RX 6800 is again the slower card out of the lot, but not by much.Īt least for its more circumspect clock speed we see a reduction in TGP from the two 300W cards above it. Some clever tweaks, many of which actually originate from Ryzen CPU R&D, help both the RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 break 2GHz with relative ease, and even creep up to the 2.5GHz barrier at times.

In the RX 6800's case, that's in large part to the power optimisations that AMD has rolled out with the RX 6000-series in order to raise the bar for performance up into the enthusiast grade and 4K gaming. In fact, you'll often see it creep plenty higher. As with other AMD cards in the RDNA 2 lineup, and even the competition, this is not necessarily the final clock speed you'll find your card to run at under duress from the latest games. It clocks in with a 1,815MHz game clock, which can boost upwards of 2,105MHz. It's the largest core disparity so far announced in the RX 6000-series lineup, but even so is not hugely disparate from its bigger siblings. It's separated from the RX 6800 XT by just 12 CUs: the RX 6800 comes with 60 CUs to the RX 6800 XT's 72. The AMD RX 6800 comes with a Navi 21 GPU of near-enough the same ilk as the RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT. Overall, this is a solid option compared to other AMD GPUs at this price point, so do consider it if you're on Team Red! Otherwise, the RTX 4070 offers considerably better performance, a better and more widely adopted upscaling technique in DLSS 2 and a frame-generation technique with DLSS 3 - now available at £560.(Image credit: AMD) AMD RX 6800 specifications

The 16GB of VRAM available here also makes the card resistant to the issues suffered on 12GB, 10GB and 8GB cards with some recent high-profile PC ports.

AMD's drivers and software have also improved, aiding performance and stability while developer uptake of FSR 2 has also improved. Since our review was published, the RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX have been released and the RX 6000-series cards have dropped a bit in price, but there's still a large margin between the 68 XT. Looking elsewhere online, this model is generally around the £500+ mark, so this is a decent deal on an RPS-favourite GPU - especially as the MSI Gaming Z Trio is a upper-tier model with some seriously impressive cooling capabilities.ĪMD is thought to be releasing a replacement to the RX 6800 at some point this year, but this could be many months away - so the RX 6800 is a good choice in the interim.

Now, MSI's RX 6800 Gaming Z Trio is down to £480 at Ebuyer here in the UK, a good price for a GPU of this calibre - if not quite as good value as the new RTX 4070.

AMD's Radeon RX 6800 graphics card is one of the firm's best mid-range to high-end options, with excellent 1080p and 1440p performance that saw it get a warm write-up here at RPS.
